6 Mistakes to Avoid When Building or Renovating Your Kitchen

Updated: Dec 20, 2021

A lot of home activities like cooking, baking, cleaning, eating, and even socializing happen in the kitchen. That’s why it is necessary to have a flawless, beautiful, spacious, and functional kitchen. To achieve a kitchen like this, avoid the following mistakes done by most homeowners while building or renovating the kitchen.

 1.   Expecting Too Much From Your Budget

A budget is created in order to have a better planning of the entire kitchen renovation or building project. Homeowners fix a budget but expect way more than the budget. They expect their renovators to provide them services and results that either is within their budget or even lower than their budget. Set a budget and see what all can be obtained within that budget rather than expecting a lot from it.

2.    Choosing Appliances Last

While building an altogether new kitchen, people often make this mistake. They plan, design and even build their kitchen first and then go out shopping for electricals. This often restricts the homeowners to choose electrical appliances like refrigerator, microwave, oven, dishwasher, etc. that suit their needs. Hence, choose your electrical appliances before building your kitchen. This will help you in designing your kitchen as per the positioning of your electrical appliances .

3.    Ignoring Enough Lights

Kitchens generally need three types of lighting: general lighting for illuminating the overall space, task lighting, and accent lighting. Homeowners forget to consider some or all of these lights which make it difficult for them to work in the kitchen. It is important to have enough general and task lights so that your kitchen doesn’t get too dark while working inside. A lot of lamps, lights, and chandeliers are available in the market that you can choose from to illuminate your kitchen and make it beautiful.

4.    Skipping Storage Spaces

Kitchens generally contain a lot of things. Right from containers to groceries, from appliances to other cooking essentials, enough storage space for everything is necessary. Plan and include enough cabinets, shelves, and storage space for everything you have or will need in your kitchen.

5.    Forgetting The Ventilation

If you fail to have enough ventilation in your kitchen, the smell of cooking will be trapped inside the kitchen itself. A good ventilation system will help improve the quality of your indoor air and vent out unwanted odor and hot temperature from the kitchen. It will also help in maintaining a cool temperature inside the kitchen and eliminate hot air that can make working in the kitchen difficult.

6.    Not Including Enough Electrical Sockets

If you have too many electrical appliances to make your cooking easier, you’ll need enough electrical sockets. Homeowners fail to understand the importance of sockets and end up having limited sockets in their kitchen. This stops them from using multiple appliances simultaneously. Hence, include enough electrical sockets in your kitchen renovation plan.
