Isn’t it lovely to spend a summer afternoon with your family outdoors? This can be done right outside your house, on your deck. If you are new homeowner, then investing in a good deck for your home is a great idea. Decks not only serve as an additional living space but also increases the aesthetic appeal of your home. There are many types of home decks available in the market. Depending on which part of the country you live in, you can choose an appropriate decking material.

Some common home deck types are listed below.

Composite Decking

Composite decks are made of wood fiber and recycled plastic. It is a relatively newer decking option. The main plus point of having a composite deck is that it is low-maintenance.  This is why a lot of people prefer composite decks over wooden decks. Composite decks come in a wide range of colors and textures. It is the only decking material which comes closest to wooden decks in appearance.

Vinyl Decking

Vinyl decks are slowly becoming the most preferred decking option in Canada. It has almost no maintenance. Vinyl decks have no wood content which eliminates the possibility of mold growth. These decks are available in many colors such as gray, white, brown and tan. Most decks come with a warranty period.

Wood Decking

Wooden decks were the classic choice for most homeowners in the olden days. It, therefore, has an old world charm to it. Wooden decks look pristine and have a high aesthetic appeal. But they are high maintenance. So you should consider having a wooden deck only if you are prepared for the future maintenance costs. There are many types of wooden decks available in the market namely, cedar, redwood, and pressure-treated wood.

Plastic Decking

Plastic decks are a good option if you are looking for something lightweight. They are also resistant to stains, rot, and mold, unlike the other decking options. These decks are completely maintenance free and are recyclable. The only drawback of plastic decks is that they expand and contract due to varying temperatures, which can make the deck unstable.
